Plowboys BBQ Bovine Bold
In the world of competition barbecue, The Pork Pullin Plowboys are one of the top dogs. Their numerous awards for barbecue is a testament to their knowledge of the pits. In addition to their barbecue achievements, they've also been awarded their fair share of trophies for their meat rubs.
Although a meat rub is one of the secret ingredients that most award winning pitmasters keep under lock and key, the Plowboys have decided to share theirs with the world. Even several other competition teams use their rub with excellent results at the judges' table.
Need I mention that I couldn't wait to get my hands on some? Let's see if this rub will help us all become the champion of our own backyard barbecue.
Initial Impressions
If you use meat rubs as often as I do, you'll appreciate the 14 oz. sized bottle. I also like what I'm seeing inside. Although the rub is primarily orange in color, I see all kinds of different colored specks. I like how the granular ingredients are all equal in size.
The listed ingredients are: Salt, Brown Sugar, Spices, including Black Pepper, Chili Powder, Paprika, Dehydrated Garlic and Onion, Worcestershire powder, Sugar, Monosodium Glutamate, Turmeric, Oregano, Extractives of Paprika and not more than 2% Calcium Stearate added to prevent caking.
The aroma of this rub is complex. I immediately detect the paprika followed by a hint of the chili powder and garlic. There's also a slight detection of the turmeric.
Out of the Bottle Taste Test
I love the initial flavor. It's that of paprika, yet other flavors dilute it so that it's not too powerful. It's followed by saltiness with a hint of sweet. A mild to medium heat takes over after that. With the heat comes just a bit of the turmeric, and I believe I caught a slight taste of the oregano. All in all, it's almost the perfect balance of flavors.
Apply the Meat Taste Test
"Try it on chicken, steaks, pork, and brisket", the bottle states. I think I'll try it on a grilled steak and a smoked chicken.
I normally don't mess with flavorings when it comes to steaks. I believe a good steak is able to hold its own when it comes to flavor. When I do, I'll use McCormick's Montreal Steak seasoning. Well, I won't be buying that anymore. Plowboys' Bovine Bold blew them away! All the flavors that were detected in the out of bottle taste test blended together to form a completely different flavor that really complimented the steak.
The apple smoked chicken came out with equally great results. Although the smoke may have diluted some of the flavor that I detected on the steak, it went well with the smoke flavor. Again, as with the steak, no certain flavor jumps out at you. There's just a nice balance of heat, sweet, and flavor.
The Final Verdict
Plowboys' Bovine Bold has moved up to the top of my list for general purpose meat rubs. I guarantee you will like this rub. In an effort to sum up this review, I'll quote from the bottle..."It has a bold combination of spices for when sweet and simple just won't do." Yep, I couldn't have said it any better.
